Northamptonshire’s Kindest Person Crowned by Rushden Lakes
Northamptonshire resident Karen Gardener has been named Northamptonshire’s Kindest Person following a community competition run by Rushden Lakes.
Following last year’s success, we set out to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day (17 February) by recognising a local individual who goes above and beyond to support others and their community.
We received more than 60 heartfelt nominations, each sharing stories of individuals making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The winning entry was awarded a £500 gift card prize, redeemable at a Rushden Lakes retailer of their choice.
Donna French, Centre Manager at Rushden Lakes, said:
“We’re delighted to crown Karen as our winner. Her commitment to bringing people together and supporting others is outstanding, and she truly embodies the spirit of kindness.
Running our Kindest Person competition brings so much joy, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the incredible kindness we see across Northamptonshire. We hope to continue shining a light on these stories for years to come.”
Entries were assessed by a judging panel against set criteria, with Karen’s nomination standing out and receiving the highest overall score.
Karen was nominated by her friend Lesly, who described her as “happy-go-lucky and very kind,” and highlighted her dedication to founding the Good Companions Club. The initiative was created to bring older members of the community together, helping to reduce loneliness and build friendships.
Karen organises fortnightly meet-ups, coordinates volunteer transport for those unable to travel independently, and ensures every session is welcoming and inclusive. The club supports more than 70 regular members and offers social activities including games, entertainment, and affordable lunches.
She also arranges special events throughout the year such as theatre trips, holidays, and seasonal celebrations, as well as thoughtful gestures including birthday treats and Valentine’s Day gifts for members. Karen is now developing a new “cuppa club” to further extend community support.
Outside of her voluntary work, Karen is a devoted grandmother, keen baker, and gardener, and is known for her consistent support of friends, family, and neighbours.
Karen said:
“I was so surprised to be nominated, let alone chosen as Northamptonshire’s Kindest Person. It’s a real honour, but it reflects everyone involved in Good Companions, not just me.
What started 10 years ago as a simple cup of tea and homemade cake for a few people has grown into a thriving community, bringing friendship and support to those who may feel lonely. That’s only been possible thanks to our amazing volunteers.
Kindness doesn’t have to be big—small gestures like checking in on a neighbour or sharing a conversation can make a real difference. We may not change the whole world, but we can change someone’s world. That’s what Good Companions is all about.”
Karen was presented with her prize of £500 worth of gift cards from Marks & Spencer and Next at Rushden Lakes.
